Liberals Block Equal Marriage on Hitch

This media release was issued by Ian Hunter and Tammy Franks on 24.11.10

Ian Hunter MLC and Tammy Franks MLC were today prevented from moving their Marriage Equality 2010 Bill in the Legislative Council thanks to a challenge by the Liberals’ Hon Robert Lucas on a procedural technicality.

Mr Hunter and Ms Franks were forced to defer their Bill until Parliament sits again next year, in the second week of February.

Mr Hunter said:

“Despite the attempt by the Hon Mr Lucas to close down debate on same sex marriage, all he has done is ensure the debate will rage in the community for the next several months.

“This is disappointing, but unsurprising.

“Ms Franks and I will be back in the Legislative Council on February 9, 2011 to introduce our Bill.”

Ms Franks said:

“The Liberal party federally have shown they are afraid of the Greens call for a conscience vote on this issue, refusing the Greens motion to consult with their constituents and now it seems they are even afraid to debate the matter in state Parliament.

“I hope common sense will prevail and we can have this Bill addressed, debated and taken on its merits through robust and rigorous debate in the chamber.

“It’s a shame the introduction of the Bill will now be postponed until the New Year, but I have no doubt this issue will be a Summer BBQ-stopper.”

Mr Hunter and Ms Franks will join other notable speakers including SA Unions Secretary Janet Giles at an Equal Love rally on the steps of Parliament House, North Tce, at 1pm this Saturday.
