Australia & American activists rally together to repeal same-sex marriage bans

This media release was issued by Community Action Against Homophobia on 25.11.08.

Human rights campaigners around Australia will join the United States and fifteen other countries in the next International Day of Action for same-sex marriage rights on December 10th.

The passage of a ban on same-sex marriage within the Proposition 8 referendum in California on November 4 has triggered a series of ground breaking protests across the United States. Rallies to demand equal marriage rights for same-sex couples sparked an international day of protest, which that occurred on the 16th of November in 300 cities, across all 50 U.S states and in a further 10 other countries.

The next action on December 10th, which will mark International Day of Human Rights, will hold rallies in Sydney , Canberra , Lismore and Perth and in over 400 cities around the world.

Rachel Evans of Community Action Against Homophobia stated “what occurred in America and around the world on November 16th was the beginning of unprecedented, international grassroots movement and display of support for the full civil equality of same sex couples”.

Evans noted, “no longer are we in the lesbian, gays, bi-sexual, transgendered, intersex (LGBTI) community willing to accept having our rights taken away, whether it be in Australia or America. People are mobilising in numbers never seen in a queer rights movement to demand that inequality that LGBTI people face must be made history. But we have to protest in order to make this history! It’s time for the federal government to repel the ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions.”

Evans concluded “We can make the marriage ban history - here and in America. We need people to come out in their numbers if we are going to successfully pressure the Rudd government to give us equal marriage and civil union’s rights”

Rally in Sydney December 10th, 6pm, under the "I had a Dream" Martin Luther King mural, King St, Newtown.
