"Adolf Reagan", by Larry Kramer

The following piece by Larry Kramer will appear in The Los Angeles Advocate issue dated July 6th, which will be on sale from June 22nd.

Our murderer is dead. The man who murdered more gay people than anyone in the entire history of the world, is dead. More people than Hitler even. In all the tributes to his passing, as I write this two days after his death, not one that I have seen has mentioned this. The hateful New York Times ("all the news that's fit to print") of course said nothing about this. We still are not fit to write about with total honesty in their pages. Not really. Just as we were not fit for Ronald Reagan to talk about us. What kind of president is that?

I have been writing a long work of history which I call The American People. I chose this title because in every speech he ever made Reagan went on and on about "the American People." We of course were never a part of his American People. And we knew it. Year after year of his hateful and endless reign we knew we were not a part of the American People he was President of. He would never talk about us, of course, or do anything for us except murder us. There were no social services for us. There was no research into our health. Even as we were dying like flies.

How could he not have seen us dying? The answer is he did see us dying and he chose to do nothing. There was no representation in his government of us. There was never anything for us but his ignoble dismissal of us. All of Washington, indeed the world, knew that Reagan hated us. How could they not? Most of them did, too. And when Daddy doesn't love you, who is there
who will stand up to Daddy? This is a trick that Hitler used and which I believe the young Reagan learned from him. He never had to say much out loud himself about his hatreds; but everyone knew what they were. Gays were as hated under Reagan as Jews were under Hitler. It is a trick that both George Bushes have carbon-copied. We have not been included among
their American people either.

I could never understand why Reagan's hatred of us was so intense and manifest and never-ending. Some of Nancy Reagan's best friends were gay, the self-loathing Jerry Zipkin, at one time her principle "walker," chief among them. It is said he taught her how to dress. In my play, Just Say No, I dramatized my own theory of why she and her husband kept gays off their agenda as if we were the plague, which of course, as in some hideous self-fulfilling prophecy, we became. Ron Reagan, Jr. That is why. It was no secret in an ever-widening circle that Ron Reagan, Jr. was suspected of being gay. In his freshman year at Yale (I believe this was his only year there; perhaps there were two) I have been told he had numerous gay experiences. I am well known at Yale. Indeed, I have established the Larry Kramer Initiative for Lesbian and Gay Studies at Yale to document the evil acts that American "history" has performed on us.

And just as damning of the son's reputation of course, because it could not be hidden, was that Ron Reagan, Jr. was a ballet dancer. This did not look good and was obviously exceedingly embarrassing to a father who rode so many horses. So off with the tutu and on with a wedding ring. Junior was married off and sent to far-off places in positions of low visibility. I have gay friends in Hollywood, equally closeted, who knew him and know him and protect him. To know him is to be sworn to some sort of pact of secrecy. What a hideous life Ron, Jr. must have led all these years. To be denied a life and to have been so utterly gutless about fighting back. (Well, we know all about that.) While his own mother was gallivanting around with some of the biggest fairies in the world. What hateful parents to have had in the prime of your life, "the great communicator" of a father out there communicating how much he hated you and his wife out there going along with this. I suspect by now Ron Reagan, Jr. actually believes he is straight. By now he may very well be. He may well have been all along. He just looked so suspicious, and of course it was this perceived suspicion that, one way or the other, is what caused his father to murder so many of us. Why does history not recognize this monstrous and
never-ending history of hatred and the inestimable number of deaths it continues to cause?

People magazine called me for a quote on Reagan's death. "I wish he had died before he was elected" is what I told them. I wonder what they will run.

It is remarkable that two of the so-called "greatest presidents" have also allowed the greatest perpetrations and perpetuations of mass murder. Franklin D. Roosevelt was shamefully inept in dealing with "the Jewish question," (see my play The Normal Heart), most ironically since so many Jews were his most loyal supporters, the Jerry Zipkins of their day. No one really writes about this. Roosevelt is one of history's great gods. Just as no one really writes about Reagan and "the gay question." These two major murderers so far have got away with helping to cause the two major holocausts of modern history. Just as Jews are asked to never forget their Holocaust I implore all gay people never to forget our holocaust and who caused it and why. Ronald Reagan did not even say the word "AIDS" out loud for the first seven years of his reign. Because of this some 70 million people, so far, have become infected with HIV/AIDS. I wonder what it feels like to be the son and the wife of a man responsible for over 70 million people so far becoming infected with a virus that has killed over half of us so far. I wonder what it felt like while he was alive to ponder this. For surely he must have thought about it. How could he not? He has been called the consummate actor who came to believe all his lines. Does this not make his legacy even more grotesque? It should.

Hitler knew what he was doing. How could Ronald Reagan not have known what he was doing?

But of course no one is writing about this. Reagan too is one of history's gods.

So far he has got away with murder.

What a hideous piece of filth!

Among the young gays now, I hear endless refusals to acknowledge that the behavior of gays itself led to the AIDs epidemic. The result of this will be a refusal to change behavior, and another epidemic.

You've done a great disservice, especially to gay people, by publishing this ugly piece of garbage.

President Reagan will be remembered as the Great Liberator, and for good reason. The freedom that he helped to win throughout the formerly Marxist world will increase the freedom of gays around the globe.

Mr. Kramer should consider his own responsibility for his own lot in this life, and cease the ugly attempt to blame it on somebody else. And, more than anything, perhaps Mr. Kramer should avail himself of the compassion and belief in God that so characterized President Reagan. He would find some peace.

The great liberataor? you should ask the people living in central America under regimes that murdered their own citizens - while Reagan's administration gave them money to do it - about that one. oops, that's right, those are brown people - it doesn't count.

Reagan as "great liberator"?

Well, even today there are some reich wing nuts who say that Hitler was a humanitarian.

What a hateful little bitch you are.

This article is shameful and just plain wrong. Last time I checked there were no trains loading up gay people and transporting them to gas chambers...

Oh, one other thing....you get aids, in most cases, by having unprotected sex. Now how does that make Reagen a murderer?

Cancer is caused by smoking and other slovenly dirty habits. Heart disease is caused by sloth and gluttony. Type II Diabetes is caused by obesity and over-consumption of sweets. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and countless other non-lethal venereal diseases are caused by promiscuity.

But all these diseases are treated, regardless of the culpability of the victims. Few people have the gall to blame a victim of these diseases for their complicity in their own sickness.

How is AIDS different? I'll tell you how: AIDS is associated with gay people, and gay people are a consistently marginalized, despised and oppressed minority in this and countless other cultures.

Until morons like Scott and Stephen Thomas above learn to normalize their judgemental behavior to include the people in their lives who smoke, drink, eat unhealthy foods, sleep around and overdo it on the sweets, then they have no foundation upon which to base their claims that we did this to ourselves.

Reagan spent more money on Legionnaire's Disease than he did on AIDS. He was a lying, cheating, morally repugnant monster without whom the world is a better place -- and I don't care how sad it makes Nancy to hear me say it.

Anybody here who thinks Reagan was not a liberator is invited to speak to folks from Eastern Europe sometime, or to others who lived under the Soviet yoke. Also to anybody in Central America who wasn't a Communist to begin with (like the 55% of Nicaraguans who voted against Ortega as soon as they were given a say in the matter).

As for AIDS, Reagan was speaking about it as early as 1985. Congress was certainly spending significant amounts of money combatting it before the end of the decade.

I'm always amused to hear people talk about how Reagan refused to approach the AIDS topic. I never knew that horny people are eager to change their behavior when some old guy like Reagan tells them to do so. If so many gay people didn't make sexual activity the central purpose around which their lives revolve, AIDS would never have become such an epidemic. And if you think that's an exaggeration, pick up a gay magazine sometime or visit a bathhouse.

This is a hysterical and idiotic article. AIDs was spread by irresponsible activities like unprotected sex and sharing needles, how did Reagan, of all people, encourage you idiots to do that?

This is just pure, ignorant hate, and to compare him to Hitler, how original, how sensible, how insightful! What are you, seventeen?

I really must check out your play since you plugged it three times during the labored course of your idiotic piece, I'm sure that would be more fun than hammering nails into my skull. I'm sure it would be another fine example of the kind of writing that makes most people just switch off these days when shrieked at by the hysterical, activist left.

Had the blatent and reckless promiscuity Kramer forgets to mention not been present, the sodomites he criticizes Reagan for ignoring wouldn't have gotten sick. Just as firearms require the action of a human being to fire, so did AIDS require action in order to spread. Its vehicle, of course, was through the disgusting and vile actions of the gay community, revealing themselves as no better than the green monkeys from which AIDS originated. Make no mistake about it: Reagan didn't ignore anybody. The sodomites of the late 70s and 80s ignored common sense and morality, and now they must lie in the beds they have made.

Posted by: Matt on Jun 16, 04 | 9:13 pm

The term sodomite is, to us, the same as the term nigger or kike or spic or whore or chink. The fact that the vast majority of AIDS sufferers in the world are heterosexual should shut your filthy lying mouth. But you have no shame and no conscience. You let God handle that for you. Unless you have something true to say, you shouldn't say anything.

Larry is a sincere passionate caring man who was fustrated to no end by the GROSS INDIFFERENCE to the AIDS crisis by Ronald Reagan and his administration. Larry was never a proponent of "free gay love" and had received vitriol from the gay community for advocating monogamy from even before the appearance of AIDS.

Larry almost singlehandedly fought both the Reagan administration and the gay community into action after watching many of his friends die a terrible wasting death. Larry may be over-the-top but his excess had prodded this country into action. I am alive today because of Larry. Thank you, LK.

This is the most ridiculous article I have ever read. I guess you can't find anything better to do then attack conservatives with your distorted views. Typical liberal, your upset because there are people out there who do not agree with you so of course you have to find someone to lay the blame on. You insist that President Reagan hated homosexuals. That is incorrect, Reagan like myself hated the sin, not the sinner.

Posted by: Vicky on May 19, 05 | 11:07 pm

This article is completely lacking any credibility. There are almost no quotes, no statistics, no recognition of the complex nature of identifying and treating a new disease, and no compelling arguments. This peice can not even be called an editorial, if anything it is a rant. Even that is giving it too much credit. This disease doesnt even have a cure today. What was a president going to do about it 20 years ago before its nature was even understood? That jumble of bitter sentences above is self serving to the author and to the community he panders to, and nothing more. Take a deep breath, collect your thoughts, and try to change peoples minds. Dont write something like this, the only thing it accomplishes is gettting other pissed of gay folk to nod their heads in agreement.

Oh btw love the whole ballerina stereotype. Didnt know that made one gay. Hooray for advancing your cause mr activist

It would be great if the people attacking the author would at least use proper grammar. It makes for a much more convincing argument!
