LGBT Roundtable

This notice about an LGBTI worker's rights rountable was issued by the ACTU on August 28th 2005.

Dear LGTBIQ community member,

The proposals announced by John Howard to change workplace law means rights at work of all Australian workers are under attack like never before.

While all workers are potentially impacted by the proposed changes, the proposal to remove protection from unfair dismissal for around four million workers is of particular concern for any community vulnerable to discrimination.

I know this is of concern to members of the LGTBIQ community around the country. I am also aware of concerns within your community about the proposed attack on awards. Important gains have been made for the LGTBI community, ensuring the community can benefit from the provisions of awards. Carers' leave, for example, has been extended to include all
members of a household. These gains are under threat from the proposed industrial relations shake up.

Your community has a tradition of standing up for basic human rights and I know you will fight this attack on your rights and the rights of all Australian workers.

This letter is an invitation to you to attend your local community forum. I welcome the initiative to set up queer community forums and offer the strong support of the ACTU for these forums.

I look forward to campaigning with your community to oppose this attack on workers' rights.
Sharan Burrow,
President,

I agree with everything u said comrade - glbt workers need to organise within their larger respective unions and caucus for their unions to lift the problems and stresses uniquely faced by glbt workers - we ourselves as glbt workers need to be more responsible for our needs being met in terms of raising glbt discrimination in the workforce ; training ; promotion and training ; ohs issues ; etc

I hope u have a merry christmas Rod - u are truly one of my heroes

divided we're poor/discriminated against/bullied/overlooked/unemployed/invisible - united we're together/there's support/we're recognised/we're acknowledged/we're taken into account/we recognised as a stakeholder/given respect/listened to!!!!!

cheers Rob
