Poverty in the gay and lesbian community
Contrary to received opinion lots of gay and lesbian people are poor. Why?

I'm in a Burnie pub surrounded by lesbians and gay men who have converged on the North West Coast town to protest outside an anti-gay rally. In the hub-bub of people ordering from the bar and scoffing their counter meals a young gay man approaches me and introduces himself. His name is Troy, he's 17 and he's on the dole. He tells me that he left school at the end of grade nine because he hated it. He was constantly hassled for not having a girl friend. He asks me about the plan for tonight. I hand him the flyer we intend to distribute. But he takes one glance and hands it back - "I don't read so well" he says, and moves on.
