This Wednesday Federal Attorney General Robert McClelland will address the Canberra Press Club on his government’s response the National Human Rights Consultation chaired by Father Frank Brennan. For Australia’s gay and lesbian community, in particular, this will be the first real opportunity to see just how serious the Rudd government is on this matter.When Labor joined forces with the Howard Government in 2004 to ban same-sex marriages, it did so purely to play footsie with the Religious Right. It felt that gay marriage was an unpopular and largely symbolic act that could be abandoned in the pitch for ‘Christian’ voters in outer marginal seats around Sydney and Melbourne.
