Legal ceremonies to remain in civil partnerships

This media release was issued by the ACT Government on 26.11.09.

Attorney General, Simon Corbell, today announced that the ACT Government had secured the agreement of the Commonwealth Government to maintain legal ceremonies for same sex couples in its Civil Partnerships Act as part of a package of amendments which will also provide for registration requirements for Civil Partnerships in the ACT.

"Today I can confirm that the ACT has maintained legal ceremonies and the legal role of civil partnership notaries in the legislation," Mr Corbell said.

"We have also agreed that couples entering into a civil partnership involving a legal ceremony will also be required to register their relationship with the registrar-general, with the relationship taking legal effect from the date of the ceremony.
