Tackling Homophobia in Tasmanian Schools

How and why is Tasmania leading the country on LGBT issues in schools?

(this keynote address was given at the "New Work, New Work" Conference in Melbourne in October 2000)

Good afternoon everyone. I've been asked to talk to you today about the gains that have been made in tackling homophobia in the Tasmanian state education system.

Nowhere in Australia has there been a more dramatic shift in public policy on homophobic bullying than there has in Tasmania and nowhere has the response to this problem been so comprehensive. To start with I'll give you a brief history of these remarkable changes then I'll summarise what I think are the keys to understanding how and why these changes have occurred.
