Human rights and sexuality discrimination at the UN
This UN sexuality and human rights lobbying kit was produced by Rodney Croome on behalf of Rights Australia.
Will the Australian Government support a UN resolution on the fundamental human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people? The March / April 2005 session of the UN Commission on Human Rights is likely to consider a resolution on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity. When such a resolution was presented in 2003 and 2004 it was supported by many countries but vehemently opposed by the Vatican and many Islamic countries. The Australian Government has so far supported the resolution. This support followed lobbying from LGBTI Australians and their supporters.
To ensure the Australian Government again supports a resolution on human rights and sexuality it’s vital that LGBTI Australians and their supporters raise their voices in favour of such a resolution.
Rights Australia urges you to write to the Members of Parliament listed below in support of a UNCHR sexuality resolution. We have included background notes on a resolution as well as a model letter.
Be aware that Australian Government representatives may respond that no final resolution has yet been tabled so no decision can be made on supporting it. It is nonetheless vital for supporters of human rights to begin expressing their concerns now. When a final draft of the resolution has been tabled we will ask you to again write to the Government to show your support for that resolution. Please also note that in letters to Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, references to his quote should be personalised.
Thank you for your time and support,
Rodney Croome
