In death, as in life, Graham Kennedy exposes the idiocy of Australian life.
Broadcaster Derryn Hinch has got himself noticed again by "outing" the late Graham Kennedy, and, for good measure, declaring he died of AIDS.
As predicted, the response has been mostly an angry one from radio listeners and newspaper correspondents declaring Kennedy’s sexual orientation a private matter. His friends say he didn't have AIDS.
Hinch’s defence to the criticism is that it’s his duty as a journalist to tell the whole truth.
Of course, the reality is that Kennedy hasn’t been outed. His homosexuality was made clear in the 2003 biography, "King", by Graeme Blundell.
But much more concerning is that public discussion of the issue is so just so poor.
On one side are those declaring the value of truth for truth sake (not always convincingly given their commercial stake in sensationalism).
On the other are those saying discretion is more important (also not very convincingly given how happy they are to go on and on about what they believe to be a something less than fit for public discourse).
Meanwhile the real public significance of Kennedy’s intimate life sinks from sight.
I'm not talking about the impact knowledge of Kennedy's sexuality has on LGBT people, although this is important.

IC writes "gay and lesbian Australians should be proud that it was a gay man who did so much to challenge the stuffy Australia of the late 1950s and early 1960s and in doing so became a hero to many and a much loved comic and celebrity to all walks of life. Most importantly, young gay and lesbian people need to know that their sexuality should be no barrier to their ambitions and that they too can become great Australians.)
I'm talking about the Kennedy's impact on how we see ourselves as Australians.
Kennedy’s sexual outsider perspective on Australian society allowed him to burrow inside the nation’s soul, dredge up what was most embarrassing and humorous about who we are, and change how we see ourselves.
Forget the possibility Kennedy had AIDS, banal questions of journalistic integrity, and homophobic arguments about "respect" for the dead, the importance of "the King's" homosexuality was that it was an anvil on which his humour helped hammered out contemporary Australia.
The saddest thing about the current furore is that it shows how little Australian public life has progressed since Kennedy first took the mickey out of it fifty years ago.
If he’s watching us now he’ll be having a good old gaffaw at our expense.
