E-mail of the day: corporate & union meddling
It’s time to tackle the SDA.
Recent developments at Microsoft has John reflecting on big organisations meddling in human rights debates.
Good to see Microsoft is re-thinking its position on that Bill.
Personally, I think organisations should take their grubby hands off legislation that doesn't affect them at all.
That's why I was so infuriated to learn that Ian Blandthorn, National Assistant Secretary for the SDA Union, wrote a homophobic submission to the Victorian Law Reform Commission Enquiry into Eligability Criteria for Assisted Reproductive Technology and Adoption.
He picks up on a common theme which is present throughout the anti-same-sex parenting submissions - he writes "Gay and lesbian people have freely chosen their own lifestyle...Gays and lesbians must accept that as a consequence of making certain decisions about their own sexuality, they cannot fufil the criteria to be parents".
The SDA (Shop Distributors & Allied Employees) Union respresents all union workers at Target, Big W, Bi Lo, Bunnings, Coles, David Jones, Ikea, Just Jeans, KFC, KMart, Pizza Hut, Woolworths and more. It is affiliated with the ACTU and the ALP.
I work at Woolworths, and I have someone speaking on MY behalf, taking positions which I am morally opposed to, on laws that have nothing to do with them!
Time for a boycott.
